Distance learning

Foundation Programme (FP) Distance learning – Where distance or other commitments prevent you from attending the classes in Peterborough, then we shall be happy to facilitate your wish to study on FP by complete distance learning. You will receive recordings of each class and discussion. We send you easy to follow instructions on how to download the recordings. We are happy for you to attend any class in Peterborough that you can make. You are welcome to email questions to us.

FP is an ongoing, weekly course on Buddhism and meditation. The course is suitable for those who already have some experience and who have an interest in deepening their understanding of Buddhist meditation and wisdom.

How do I start?

As we are currently three-quarters of the book Meaningful to Behold, we suggest that you hold your wish to join until we start the next book. This will be sometime during the first half of 2018.

If you haven’t already done so, this will also give you time to join us for some General Programme (drop-in) classes, branch classes, half day or day courses. You will then get to know your fellow future students and gain some experience of meditation and Buddhist teachings.

If you would like us to contact you nearer the time please contact us using the form provided.

When you join the Foundation Programme, you commit to studying one book. This can take differing lengths of time, depending on which book is being studied.

The benefits of studying on FP

There are three reasons why we benefit from the study and practice of Buddhism and meditation:

  • Increase wisdom
  • Cultivate a good heart
  • Maintain a peaceful state of mind

Although we wish for happiness, ignorance leads us to engage in negative actions, which are the main cause of all our suffering, therefore we need to develop our wisdom. If we do not cultivate a good heart, a selfish motivation destroys harmony and good relationships with others. We have no peace, and no chance to gain pure happiness. Without inner peace, outer peace is impossible. If we do not maintain a peaceful state of mind we are not happy even if we have ideal conditions. On the other hand, when our mind is peaceful we are happy even if our external conditions are unpleasant. Therefore, the development of these qualities is of utmost importance for our daily happiness.

What to expect

In each class there are guided meditations, teachings on the book, and discussion in pairs. Every fifth or sixth class is a group discussion, which enables students to ask questions and clarify the meaning of the text.

What are we studying?

We are currently studying Meaningful to Behold by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. A highly acclaimed commentary to the verse masterpiece Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life, that gives practical advice for developing all the qualities we need to attain enlightenment. We are learning how to cultivate love and compassion, how we can genuinely benefit others and how to practise the methods that lead us to enlightenment.
